Abstract: Gábor Devecseri (1917-1971) was one of the most significant figures in the history of 20th-century Hungarian literary translation, translating works by Catullus, Homer, Plautus, Ovid, Aeschylus, Euripides, and others into Hungarian. His estate contains numerous variants of his translations. This study examines the reasons for the creation of these variants and the changes in literary translation methods. The manuscript materials in the Manuscript Collection of the Petőfi Literary Museum document not only the translator's work, but also the joint work of the editor and translator and the background work of the publisher. During the research that formed the basis of this study, we examined the handwritten and typed manuscripts of the translations, as well as the publisher's corrections and the editors' opinions. We also used information relating to the translation from correspondence and other personal documents.
