Abstract: This study explores the relationship between European civilisation and culture through the concept of geoculture, focusing on the evolution of group identity. Civilisation and culture are treated as two interrelated geocultural levels, clarifying their differing uses across Europe. Drawing on theories by Norbert Elias, Samuel Huntington and others, it examines how geographic space and cultural self-identification interact. Special attention is given to the French concept of civilisation and the German notion of Kultur and their influence on national identity. Literary examples, including Victor Hugo and János Arany, illustrate critical reflections on civilisation. The concept of geoculture provides a framework for understanding the interplay of identity layers and their role in shaping geopolitical processes.
