Abstract: This study examines a notable work of contemporary Hungarian children’s literature, Gábor Nógrádi’s treasure-hunt adventure novel Alattunk a kincs [The Treasure Beneath Us]. It becomes evident how the author’s prose poetics are characterised by a small-town, open-air-museum quality, manifesting itself in both narrative expression and the lyrical elevation of emphasised passages, alongside a dynamic plot and vivid humour—yet also by exaggeration and a pronounced didactic intent. This panorama, as well as the aftermath of the central, adventurous narrative thread of the novel, is mediated via a variety of documentary-fictional elements, ranging from interviews to evidential records and e-mails. These components offer an engaging way to handle large amounts of information, while they also hold significant potential for creative development within experiential pedagogy. Nógrádi does not shy away from confronting the reader with complex historical and social issues, demonstrating his commitment to taking his audience seriously and encouraging them to form their own critical standpoint.
