Abstract: The European Union’s 2030 resolution targets to reduce early school leaving below 9% and to increase the number of graduates of higher educational institutions across its member states. This case study followed the performance of first-year university students and investigated the causes of early leaving of higher education in the field of computer science. The study evaluated the freshmen’s progress through a repeated measures test combined with grades achieved in classes dealing with introductory programming. It was observed that students without prior knowledge split into two characteristic groups with opposite learning achievements. The developed measurement instrument enables early identification of students at risk, allowing for preventive measures to support the development of programming skills and the above outlined goals.
Keywords: attrition, early school leaving, repeated measures, student success, higher education
