Abstract: In my study, focusing on the First Book of Maccabees, I present the rivalry between the three brothers, Judas, Jonathan, and Simon, and its historical background. The acquisition of power is always a delicate issue, even, or especially, when it takes place between brothers. Although the author of the book tries to present the events as reactions to external circumstances, a careful reading of the text reveals certain tensions in the relationship between the brothers. In the case of Jonathan and Simon in particular, it is clear that their relationship was not solely defined by brotherly love.
