Abstract: The study of NEET youth (15–24 or 15–29-year-olds who are not in employment, education, or training) has gained significant importance across all member states of the European Union in recent decades. However, research only partially addresses the social and economic risks associated with a high proportion of NEET youth and the extent to which a country’s competitiveness is affected when young people at the beginning of their careers lack marketable qualifications and either do not enter the labour market or do so only temporarily. In this study, we use the methodology of a systematic literature review to seek potential explanations for how and to what extent the presence of NEET youth in Hungarian society impacts various areas of competitiveness. To answer these questions, we examine young people’s participation in education, labour market entry (or lack thereof), and economic activity.
