Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises play a fundamental role in economic growth, innovation and employment. The aim of our study is to provide a comprehensive picture of the most important global and local challenges affecting the competitiveness of the SME sector. The literature review pays special attention to the limited funding opportunities, the increase in market competition, the challenges of technological innovations and digitalization, and the problems related to human resources. The results of the study show that the development of adaptability and innovation is of fundamental importance for small and medium-sized enterprises in order to preserve and increase their competitiveness. These findings can contribute to the development of effective economic policy measures that can support the sustainable development of SMEs.
