Abstract: THE HISTORY OF THE HUNGARIAN FOLK PLAY AND CONCEPTUAL
EXPLANATIONS – A LITERATURE OVERVIEW
Defining the Hungarian folk play form remains a challenging task to this day, with varying
and often fundamentally different genre definitions appearing in the works of scholars
from diverse disciplines (e.g. ethnography, literary history, theatre history, and music
history). The most widely accepted definitions describe the Hungarian folk play either as
(1) a genre “about the people for the people” or (2) a play not necessarily about the people
but performed for them. This study aims to present several articles on Hungarian folk
plays, ranging from those published in the 1920s to more recent works, highlighting both
the similarities and differences found in the definitions used across various fields.
