Abstract:
THE ROLE OF FUNERAL RITUALS IN THE CONCEPT OF LIFE AFTER DEATH IN HINDUISM
Different religions have different views on death and the events that accompany it. Each stage has an important role: preparing for death, facing it, saying goodbye and burial, mourning and processing - these are all present in various religions, because behind all of this is a person, whether a practicing religious person or not. In many cases, the role of religions is significant for those who are members of that religion, but different things are emphasized and characteristic when we examine them more closely. The rites characteristic of Hinduism affect all areas of life, including events related to death. Funeral customs are different depending on the area and caste, which we do not aim to fully present, but to point out or understand in relation to one characteristic custom, what is the purpose and mission of the multitude of rituals for those belonging to Hinduism. First, we briefly outline Hinduism's teaching on life after death. After that, we will present the customs that are typical for each funeral, and then we will try to find connections between the rites and the perception of life after death.
