Abstract: It is generally considered that Slavic languages are related most prominently in the lexi-con, which makes it relatively easy for Slavs to communicate even in a situation when each of the communicants uses his own langauge. However, observation of communica-tion between Slavs shows that the degree of understanding depends on the topic of communication. If the subject of communication is everyday matters related to family, re-latives, children, etc. understanding between the Slavs is problem-free. However, when it comes to understanding in the field of higher communication spheres (culture, adminis-tration, law, economy, science, etc.), mutual understanding is almost impossible. The author illustrates this fact by analysing several communication interactions between Slo-vaks and Slovenians.

Keywords: Slavic languages, inter-Slavic communication, linguistic affinity, understanding, commu-nication spheres.
