Abstract: Problem solving is an important tool in the subject of mathematics. We can use it to practice the dif-ferent topics or for deepening the knowledge. In most cases, the solution of the problem is written on paper, less frequently on the board by the students. At the board the student has the opportunity to express himself verbally, while during the written examination we are not able to get a better insight into the students’ way of thinking. In this study, we supplemented the paper-based solutions with mixed-type interviews, to better understand the students train of thought.

Keywords: Problem solving, open tasks, mechanical thinking
