Abstract: With the 1918 fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, multinational, hence multilingual Central-Europe lost the former framework of its existence. Living conditions started changing, and the attitudes determining actions transformed in a process over a prolonged period of time. Gregor von Rezzori belongs among authors whose work had been influenced by the cultural-civilisational gravity of the Austro-Hungarian Empire between the two world wars and in the subsequent period. The most salient feature of his writings is the unvarnished honesty, an almost natural way of writing about his antisemitism in his childhood and youth, without the benefit of hindsight. I will examine a few particular features of his memoirs, the relationship between fact and fiction, which is based on a distinct concept of truth, the character of memories interlaced with emotions and the decisive features of his antisemitism – mainly based on the stories of his volume entitled The Memoirs of an Antisemite, published in 1979.
