Abstract: The present study deals with the Slovak analysis of a poem by Sándor Petőfi. The study examines two different translations of the poem translated by two prominent Slovak poets, Ján Smrek and Emil Boleslav Lukáč, using the method of functional stylistics. The aim of the research is to find out how the Slovak language text variants are adequate to the Hungarian language poem on the basis of the examined text. The method of analysis of the research is functional stylistics that can be synthesized with communicative equivalence, which examines the function of linguistic elements in both source and target language texts at different levels of the text, considering them as text variants of each other. The selected text for analysis is Sándor Petőfi’s poem Egy gondolat bánt engemet and its Slovak lan-guage variants.
