Abstract: In this study, we address higher education students’ employment, the motives behind it, and the factors which affect these motives. Based on the literature, we formulate our hypotheses in relation to the order and types of motives as well as the effect of students’ socio-demographic background and pro-gram characteristics on the motives. In our empirical work, we use survey data from five countries of Central and Eastern Europe (N=2199) to carry out cluster analysis based on the motives for paid work. In addition, we conduct multinomial regression to analyse the effects on the likelihood of belonging to a certain cluster. According to our findings, members of one student group we identify are not moti-vated to gain professional experience and engage in work which is hardly related to their studies. They are characterised by a relatively young age and participation in state-funded programmes.
