Abstract: This paper attempts to show to what extent the essay which is situated between literature and philosophy, art and conceptual thought. It is a genre that is difficult to categorise, because the philosophical and poetic presence simultaneously organizes this special speech mode. I would like to present Lukács’s and Adorno’s interpretations of the essay in order to demonstrate how these authors characterized this form. Both of them emphasized the fragmentary and particularistic character of the essay. This article deals with various understandings of the essay and attempts to delineate theoretical, rhetorical, epistemological aspects/features of this genre as a non-systematic way of writing, and outlines how the interpretation tradition has approached this genre spanning over disciplines.

Keywords: essay, essayistic writing, non-systematic way, György Lukács, T.W. Adorno, fragmentarity
