Abstract: Bridging the geographical distance during the distance education of the coronavirus lockdown in the spring of 2020 was undoubtedly a challenge for all participants of education. However, the mental distance between teachers and students has always been a similarly vital issue. The present paper wishes to scrutinize the special features of teacher-student communication during the distance learning period. It also attempts to examine the positive effects of synchronous and asynchronous teaching on the teacher-student interaction as experienced in university courses. Communication, especially written communication became not only more intensive but also more personalized and student-centred, while faculty were more accessible for students due to the application of diverse communication channels and online platforms. As a consequence of the communication-rich, collaborative and personalized character of distance education during the above period, it could contribute to the elimination of the gap between students and teachers.
