Abstract: The aim of our work was to clarify the factors leading to early termination of study at public universities in general and at the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava. We evaluated students of nine grades who started to study in the academic years 2004/2005 to 2012/2013. The study at medical faculties in Slovakia lasts 6 years (12 semesters), so we obtained data on graduates from 2009/2010 to 2017/2018. These statistics show that 12 % of the students who started their studies in that period did not finish their studies. The problem of unsuccessful study at public universities is complex. It is influenced by several factors, both subjective and objective. Without dispute, personality, intellectual and character traits, strong motivation, systematic, diligent and purposeful study to acquire enough knowledge and professional skills are a prerequisite for successful completion of university studies.
