Abstract: The first important step during the entrance of the child to kindergarten or primary school is learning about the child´s abilities, skills, competency, character traits, temper and other features and determining the level of development of his or her personality. The pedagogical diagnostic knowledge contributes to more efficient and personalised development in the institutions. The competency based preschool and primary school development requires the search for innovative ways of solution, in which one element is the cultivation of pedagogical diagnostic processes and the planning and development based on it. The study deals with the actual opportunities of pedagogical diagnostics, applied methods, focusing mainly on the transition from kindergarten to primary school. It shows the current domestic situation, points to its tendencies, defects and gives advice for better practice.
