Abstract: In this paper I examined the background of the Greek term "anathema". The first impulse gave me the studying of The Letter of Paul to the Galatians. In this letter the apostle uses two different words to express malediction. One of them, the anathema, captured my attention with its various shades of meaning and with the fact that it was previously used related to the cult too. First of all I explored the way how does the holiness of the Old Testament remain in Apostle Paul's idiom maledictis. On the other hand I researched the phenomenal evolution of the term – how did the profane idiom anathema become the symbol of the church anathema or rather the symbol of the fulmination unto the late antiquity. In order to clear the questions connected to the term I used beyond the Bible other Greek and Latin sources as well.
