Abstract: Aurél Kolnai`s name is better known abroad than in his home country, although his achievements in philosophy, mainly political philosophy are significant. Between 1929 and 1935, as a sensitive observer, he analyses the emotional culture of the modern man in his three works on phenomenology of emotions. The subjects of these works are disgust (Der Ekel), pride (Der Hochmut) and hatred (Versuch über den Haß). The texts contain hardly any references to other authors, which indicates that they are niche and original achievements. It is also supported by Edmund Husserl`s comment upon reading Der Ekel (Disgust) that Kolnai`s work is hard to fit within the framework of phenomenology. According to Kolnai`s reflection on Husserl`s comment, his primary aim was the phenomenological intention rather than the methods of phenomenology. In this study, I am attempting to provide an overview of Kolnai`s works on phenomenology of emotions by analysing the insights of two of his Hungarian interpreters, Gábor Boros and Béla Bacsó, in connection with the above mentioned works.
