Abstract: The aim of this article is to present specific literary responses to the Spanish Civil War (1936 – 1939) in Slovak interwar literature. We focus on a group of authors (Juraj Koza Matejov, Žofia Thielová alias Magda, Gregor Cút, Karol Murgaš, Štefan Schultz, and others) who directly responded to this historical event and accepted its National Christian narrative. In their literary texts, they expressed sympathy for the persecuted Spanish Catholics and support for General Francisco Franco's nationalist army, which fought for National and Christian values. We noted individual differences between authors who were influenced to varying degrees by the ideology of Christian nationalism or who paid tribute to the victims of the Red Terror, whom they considered martyrs. The article contains an analysis and classification of works, as well as a comparison with authors (L. Novomeský, J. Rob Poničan, P. Horov, and others) who represent left-wing and anti-fascist attitudes that still resonate in literary consciousness today.
