Abstract: This study focuses on the importance of shaping national identity in early childhood education, with special attention to the multicultural environment of Transcarpathia. Preschool education offers multiple opportunities for fostering national identity, particularly through the conscious use of decorative arts. The theoretical framework of the article outlines the main characteristics, symbolism, similarities, and differences of Ukrainian and Hungarian folk painting traditions. In the empirical part, a 23-item questionnaire was distributed among 85 preschool teachers working in Hungarian-language kindergartens in Transcarpathia. The results indicate that teachers primarily use painting and drawing, integrating Hungarian motifs more frequently, while Ukrainian elements appear less often. According to the respondents, decorative arts are an effective tool in developing children’s national identity, although there is a clear need for modern methodological materials and professional training to enhance practical implementation.
