Abstract: Recreation and leisure professionals play a vital role in promoting health-oriented lifestyles through physical activity, balanced nutrition, and mental well-being. Achieving these aims requires strong intrinsic motivation, commitment, and a clear professional identity. To sustain the profession, understanding students’ motivations and socialization is essential. This qualitative study examined factors shaping professional identity and persistence through interviews with nine Hungarian program leaders (N = 9). Results show that students are motivated mainly by sport experience, health values, and social engagement. Professional identity is strengthened by role-model educators, practice-based learning, and supportive institutions. Reinforcing motivation and socialization is crucial for persistence and professional retention, contributing to the prestige and sustainability of the recreation and leisure profession.
