Abstract: The study focuses on certain distinctive phenomena in the poetry of one of the contemporary Hungarian poets, András Ferenc Kovács, with special emphasis on the ancient verse forms. Its aim is to identify, distinguish, and compare the metrical structures used by the poet. Both rule-following and unconventional variations of specific verse forms are presented through selected poems, followed by metrical and prosodic analysis. The poet has lots of unusual aspects, including his stylistic diversity, the intertextuality in his works, and the various “masks” he uses. This part is followed by the introduction of particular verse forms and their appearances, beginning with iambic, continuing with trochaic, and then dactylic structures. The study also discusses the hexameter and the distichon, and concludes with an examination of the connections between quantitative and Japanese verse forms.
