Abstract: The Department of International Business Languages at Budapest University of Economics and Business (BUEB) — recently restructured and renamed as the Office of Languages for Specific Purposes— has traditionally offered a wide range of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Since the establishment of the Department, all ESP courses have been conducted in seminar format. In 2024, a new course titled English for Business and Social Studies was introduced as part of an initiative to expand ESP offerings to involve more students in language classes. Uniquely, this was the first course in the department’s history to be delivered primarily in the form of lectures. The present study aims to critically evaluate the effectiveness of lecture-based instruction in ESP courses and argues that such a format is fundamentally incompatible with the specific requirements of ESP learners.
