Abstract: This packetbook chapter analyses Zoltán Jeney’s eco-oriented fairy-tale novel Balatoni kacsavész [Balaton Duck Crisis]. Green themes are among the focal points of contemporary Hungarian children’s literature. In such eco-oriented works, adults are usually presented as threatening forces, arbitrary exploiters of nature’s treasures, while child protagonists appear as champions of sustainability who resist them. In Zoltán Jeney’s Balatoni kacsavész, however, nature and its fantastic as well as less fantastic inhabitants can rely only on themselves. Considering the circumstances of its publication, the work deliberately set out to draw attention to the dangers threatening the ecological values of Lake Balaton. The outcome, however, is not a piece of applied literature but a book employing postmodern text-organising strategies and self-reflections on the process of literary construction, which through its characters also highlights the transnational, transcultural, and transcanonical nature of environmental protection. In this form, the chapter can be regarded both as a classroom teaching aid and as an integral unit of a new, continuously expanding literature textbook, that is, a packetbook, which discusses the novel Balatoni kacsavész through hermeneutical, experiential learning, and creative writing exercises.
