Abstract: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a set of metabolic and vascular abnormalities that include insulin resistance with compensatory hyperinsulinemia, central or visceral obesity, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, microalbuminuria, oxidative stress, prothrombotic and proinflammatory abnormalities, endothelial dysfunction and hyperuricemia. These risk factors have a higher overall vascular and metabolic risk than the individual factors alone. Obesity is a chronic clinical condition that results from genetic, metabolic, environmental, and behavioral factors and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. In most cases, it is the result of a long-term chronic energy imbalance with increased energy intake and decreased energy expenditure. The issue of preventing metabolic syndrome is complex; at the social level of health promotion, it is a set of legislative measures and society-wide and community programs serving to preserve or improve health.
