Abstract: Memes as Innovative Didactic Tools in German Language Teaching
The study examines the didactic potential of internet memes, focusing on the teaching of
cultural and regional topics. Memes were known as popular and well-known internet
content combining humorous images and text in the pre-pandemic period and their didactic
potential was highlighted during the pandemic. As a result of Web 2.0, users are
no longer passive consumers, but active content creators (Mészáros, 2018). With easy-touse
web interfaces, smart devices can be used to create and share complete multimedia
content on the web at any time. The main objective of the study is to present memes about
German language classes and to discuss their advantages and disadvantages. At the end
of the study, concrete examples are given to illustrate the mnemonics on the topic cultural
and regional topics and their possible use in foreign language lessons.
