Abstract: SUB-SURFACE HUMAN INTERACTIONS IN PETER ANDRUŠKA'S DETECTIVE
NOVEL BETTER PEOPLE
The paper points out the significance of Peter Andruška's novel Lepší ľudia (eng. Better
People) within the natural development of Slovak literature. It lists selected metatexts
(literary criticism) on the given prototext. It highlights the detective elements of prose in
the background of various difficult interpersonal relationships. It contrastively describes
the life of a single person in a village, in a small town and in the capital. Important motives
and personal characteristics that determine individual human interactions are
gradually interpreted. This highlights the psychology and actions of the characters in the
background of the evident crime (and its investigation).
