Abstract: BRO GOZH MA ZADOÙ – OLD LAND OF MY FATHERS
Understanding each other's concepts of national identity is necessary not only between countries but also within countries. An example is the Brittany region (France), where the sense of local identity is very strong. This regional group identity is understood differently in France and Hungary. In the Hungarian understanding, Bretons are considered an indigenous national minority living in France, whereas in France, legally recognized nationalities do not exist. This paper and presentation analyze Bro Gozh Ma Zadoù (the Breton anthem) using the concepts of civilization and culture as presented in Norbert Elias's book „The Process of Civilization”. The Breton anthem was translated into Hungarian for this analysis. The study presents the methods, dilemmas, and difficulties involved in this process. Our research shows that within French conception of civilization, Breton identity aligns with the concept of culture.
