Abstract: SOME ASPECTS OF BILINGUALISM AND MULTILINGUALISM IN EDUCATION
The present paper discusses the basic concepts of migration linguistics developed in recent
years in the linguistics community in Germany and raises further questions concerning
the relevance of appropriate language teaching methods suitable for the new language
landscape in Europe. Acquiring new approaches to multilingualism is vital for students
majoring in foreign languages.
The paper emphasizes the need for up-to-date knowledge and methods in relation to
teaching and learning foreign languages. It is a trivial fact that a great number of children
and adult people live under foreign language conditions in countries where the state
languages or commonly spoken languages differ completely from their own home languages,
thus hindering their social integration and civic – cultural participation.
In addition to acknowledging the manifold benefits of multilingualism, we strive to have a
deeper understanding of decisive dynamics of language use in the linguistics repertoire of
speakers with a migration background.
