Abstract: WHAT IS WRONG WITH TEACHING PHONETICS?
Phonetics is seen as "one of the most difficult and least liked" grammar topics in public
education (Istók–Tóth–N. Varagya 2021, 57), especially in Hungarian schools. Because
of this, students studying Hungarian language often have "negative attitudes" towards it
at the start of their studies (Bóna–Markó, 2009). This research aims to answer the question
posed in its title – What is the problem with teaching phonetics? — based on a questionnaire
survey conducted among Hungarian language teachers in a mostly Hungarianspeaking
region of Slovakia (Dunajská Streda District) (N=32). The study is based on a
key part of my thesis (Cséfalvay, 2023) and seeks to introduce textbook writers, researchers,
Hungarian language teachers, and other interested professionals to this widely
known but rarely examined issue.
