Abstract:
DIACONIA, A DOOR INTO CHURCH
The word diaconia has many meanings. The understanding of this keyword of the service of the church depends on the point of view from where we look at it. This paper is about the different understanding of the diaconia including its position in systematic theology and practice. The paper sees these different approaches as different doors into God’s Church. The doors could be named as the door of systematic theology where we try to find the biblical verses defining diaconia. The paper deals with the definition given by Sandor Joó and Collins. Another door could be named as the practical point of view driven by Sandor Makkai and the WCC with his concept of ecumenical diaconia. Another separate way to diaconia leads us through pastoral care, where we introduce the results of Isidor Baumgartner. Also the paper seeks the minimum common meaning, the red line, which defines the substance of diaconia.
Keywords: diaconia, ecumenical diaconia, systematic theology, Sandor Joó, Sandor Makkai, WCC
