Abstract:
UKON TAKAYAMA, THE CANONIZED SAMURAI
The study would like to point out one of the turning points in the Christian conversion in Japan through the life of Takayama Ukon, The early modern missionary activity in Japan among the more prestigious samurai families was not really successful, especially not lasting and faithful. Takayama Ukon, who became a Christian, in the Age of Warring States, not only as a samurai and daimyō, but also as a Christian, he successfully faced the life difficulties presented to him. The study would like to describe the circumstances of Takyama Ukon's conversion to Christianity, his political-military career as a Christian, as well as the discrimination due to his Christian faith in the last years of his life, which took the form of demotion and confiscation of property, and ultimately exile. Takayama Ukon is the first saint of Japanese Christianity who was not canonized as a group, but as a single saint.
