Abstract:
ENGLISH OR GERMAN?
THE PRESENCE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN KINDERGARTENS
OF WESTERN TRANSDANUBIA
In the region of Hungary that borders Austria, German has long been the dominant foreign language. This is understandable, as thousands of people need knowledge of this language for employment in Austria. A significant proportion of parents choose German as the first foreign language for their children in primary school or even in kindergarten. This is also reinforced by the presence of German ethnic groups in the region. Several kindergartens and schools offer German ethnic education, which can be an influential factor in the choice of institution. In recent years, however, the spread of the English language has become increasingly noticeable, while the prominence of the German language, by contrast, shows a declining trend (Nikolov, 2003). In our research, we sought to answer the question of whether this region reflects the national trend or if German is still the dominant foregin language in kindergartens.
