Abstract:
WOMEN’S MAGAZINES IN THE LIBRARY OF THE KESZTHELY CASTLE
The research is part of a larger investigation into the cultural consumption habits of women members of the aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the presumed impact this had on the cultural, social and political processes of the period. My present research focuses on the material of the only intact private aristocratic library in Hungary, located in the Festetics family's castle in Keszthely. The family typically valued intellectual property, accumulated a great deal of intellectual capital, and were patrons of culture and education. The ladies of the family also played their part in these noble tasks. For this reason, my research focused on contemporary women's newspapers in the Helikon library. It can be traced that several female members of the Festetics family had a keen interest in the arts (literature, music, etc.). Thus, the study of the press products they read, which are still available in the Helikon library, enables us to assess and present the cultural consumption habits of the period and, more specifically, of a certain social stratum, namely the ladies of the aristocracy.
