Abstract: In our study, we explore the academic and social situation of Vietnamese students who are pursuing their higher education in Hungarian after successfully completing the longestablished one-year Hungarian language preparation course. Following a brief historical overview of this course, we will examine why, from a linguistic point of view, our Vietnamese students are not progressing as expected. What help they receive or would need to complete their academic tasks and which areas cause them difficulties. Suggestions are made to facilitate the study of the Hungarian language and to build the confidence of other international students. We also look at the use of the Hungarian-English-Vietnamese language in their academic and everyday life. Finally, we look at the students' prospects in the Hungarian labour market.
