Abstract:
In the 19th century, cholera reared its head countless times in Europe and Hunga-ry. In Cluj-Napoca, three major waves of outbreaks could be distinguished. The infections that spread during wartime were given a special name, which in the early twentieth century was called war cholera.
The wave that broke out in the summer of 1873 proved to be the most dangerous of all, with 1 081 people falling ill and 537 dying in the summer of that year.
The churches were also involved in the fight against the epidemic. The authorities have asked for the help of clergy to make people better informed about the epidemiological situation. They asked pastors and priests to inform the faithful at Sunday and festive services about what they can do to help fight the epidemic. They were also expected to promote cholera vaccination.
The study examines the news and reports in the daily newspapers of Cluj-Napoca in 1872-73 to give an idea of the impact of the late 19th century epidemic on the people and the role of the churches in the fight against the epidemic.
