Abstract: The intent to educate can always be discerned in Umberto Eco's works of fiction. Besides historical knowledge, it also covers cultural-historical and philosophical knowledge. The novels can be looked upon as introductory works to the knowledge of a given age. In his novel, The Island of the Day Before, Eco set the story in the first half of the 17th century. The plot develops around the problematics of determining longitudes. In the text, I examine the philosophical principles of 17th century knowledge embedded in a philosophical framework, furthermore, how the knowledge reflecting the convictions of the preceding period, as the beliefs of the Renaissance, is also present alongside the scientific-philosophical discourse of the first half of the 17th century.
Keywords: Umberto Eco, Renaissance knowledge, modern philosophy, new science
