Abstract: The ‘New York Railroad Storm’ of May 1921 resulted in one-order-of-magnitude-faster variations of the geomagnetic field than the famous storm which in 1989 caused exten-sive damage to the electrical grid in Quebec. The magnetogram catching declination and ver-tical intensity for the storm of May 1921 by the Stará Ďala observatory was preserved, but the scales of the plotted graphs were provided neither in magnetogram itself nor in other sources. Our goal was to determine the missing scales by using data from both before and after the studied event and reconstruct the magnetogram. Although the preserved record does not cover the entire storm, it still shows extremely large variations of the field: in declination up to al-most 1° in less than 1 hour (followed by going out of range), in the vertical component an increase of up to 85 nT in less than 3 hours (after returning to the measuring range).
