Abstract: In the second half of the 19th century the churches had to give an answer urgently to the question about their place and function in the modern societies. They had to work out the relationship between the state and the church, and find the financial background for supporting and sustaining the churches’ office-bearers and their buildings. Another urgent issue which required a response was about the membership of the church in a more and more secularized society. The masses turned away from the religion and from the church, but the gospel was still to be preached in this changing world. In this paper we examine the relationship of the Hungarian Reformed church and the state from the middle of the 19th century to the end of the first world war.

Keywords: secularization, relationship of church and state, absolutism, dualism, independent church, autonomy
