Abstract: Mrs. Gyula Illyés, Flóra Kozmutza PhD. is a decisive representative of the Hungarian special education of the 20th century. She dedicated all her life to the support of the men-tally disabled and to the reform of the special educational psychology. She was deeply in-terested both in the previous and in the following phases of the institutional education of the disabled people. She gave her particular concern for completing its institutional net-work, for early diagnosing and early development of the mentally disabled, for refining the methods of special education and for the issue of the social judging of the retarded people and of the employment of the disabled grown-ups. She became one of the essential authors of scientific literature of special education due to the periodic publications of the achievements of her research and to her numerous gap-filling publications in her profes-sional field. This study provides an overview of the milestones of her professional career and of her efforts to raise the social status of this field of science, also of a honourable profession.
