Abstract: In Hungary, the vibrant social and economic life of the early nineteenth century also opened up new opportunities for women. Most of the primary industrial vocational schools or courses established at that time served the training of women. Social organizations and women’s associations took on the responsibility of establishing and maintaining these institutions. Teréz Karacs, raised in the national spirit in the Karacs House, which was considered unique at the time from the aspect of the history of education and culture, was an educated lady with a remarkable reasoning ability, who did not regard women’s disadvantage in he field of education and culture as a predestined and unchangeable phenomenon but specifically as one to be overcome. In nearly all of her writings, she argued for the education of Hungarian girls in the Hungarian language and national spirit. In the bosom of the Reformed Church, she founded and operated girls’ educational institutes in Mis-kolc and Kolozsvár with far more success than her contemporaries. In her career as a writer and teacher, a sense of responsibility for national culture and selfless service were intertwined.
