Abstract: In this study, we examine the motives behind higher education students’ (N=2199) voluntary activity. Besides traditional volunteering, which has the objective of helping others, it is increasingly frequent among young people to take part in novel, career-focused volunteering, which is aimed at networking, the acquisition of professional knowledge, and the possibility to gain experience from various employers (“revolving-door volunteering”). We carry out cluster analysis and find that our sample indeed contains career-focused volunteers, who also find it important to help others, however. It is also revealed that voluntary activity among STEM (in particular, engineering, computer science, and natural sciences) and business students is rarely related to their field of study, implying that they cannot take full advantage of the career advancement potential offered by volunteering.
