Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the life and work of the Pressburg`s Jew, Bernard Jean Bettelheim, who later was working as an Anglican missionary. An important time for him was the eight years of work in Okinawa (1846 - 1854). During this time he dealt with the translation of some books of the New Testament and the basic theses of Ryūkyū grammar they also were printed. After moving to the United States, he remained active as a preacher.
