Abstract: This paper focuses on one of the most frequent word formation methods of the German language, forming compounds, more precisely exocentric compounds [exozentrische Komposita in German]. The author, based on her extensive teaching experience, illustrates the methodology to cover German compound words, such as Glückspilz or Pechvogel, in university level, German as a foreign language teacher training programs. The methodology of teaching these compounds is built on illustrative linguistic examples. In order to develop a structured, complex linguistic approach to, and linguistic awareness of these compounds, networks should be established between the relevant items of different linguistic disciplines, in other words one should involve semantics, stylistics, phraseology and cultural history in the discussion and teaching of these compound words. Teaching methodology should also involve the contrastive approach, i.e. linguistic comparisons with Hungarian as a mother tongue. The paper also discusses what tasks and exercises are suitable to deepen knowledge related to exocentric compounds and to activate this knowledge in speech production and in teaching German as a foreign language.

Keywords: endocentric and exocentric compounds, semantics, phraseology, cultural history, metaphor and metonymy
