Abstract: Key competences are those, which all individuals need for personal fulfilment and development, active citizenship, social inclusion and employment. Teacher competences are mainly pedagogical, educational and social skills and abilities, but must be supplemented by other competences, skills and qualities. The research examined opinion of students to key competences and to selected teachers' competences, abilities, skills, knowledge and attitudes. The first and second-year students involved were attending the study programmes Biology and Teaching of biology (in combination), and other study programmes at the Faculty of Education, J. Selye University in Komárno, Slovakia, and three other universities with Hungarian teaching language from Rumania, Ukraine and Serbia. 386 students completed an electronic questionnaire during the autumn semester of the academic year 2018/19. The testing focused on competences in natural sciences in comparison with other teacher competences. The questionnaire contains 40 competences which, in our judgment, could be important for teachers in practicing their profession, therefore, may be related to the drop-out of students.

Keywords: Teacher competences, competences in natural sciences, students, biology, study programs, Slovakia, Rumania, Ukraine, Serbia.
