Abstract: 22-year-old Melanchthon started his activity as a Biblical scholar, professor of theology exactly 500 years ago, in the autumn of 1519, giving lectures upon exegesis at the Theological Faculty of the University of Wittenberg. In this paper, due to space limitation, we focus on his work done for the promotion of education. We present his commitment to teaching and schools, his concept of education, his methodological innovations as well as his textbook writing activity. For his merits earned in education, Melanchthon was named Praeceptor Germaniae as early as in the 1590s. Based on the latest research, today he is often called the teacher of Europe, as his influence was not limited to the German-speaking countries but spread all over the continent and he shaped the history of the church, education and culture with a long-term effect.
