Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the life and work of James Curtis Hepburn, highlighting his missionary work in Japan. Hepburn was a key figure of the Christian mission in Japan in the 19th century. Besides his job as a doctor, he compiled the Japanese-English and English – Japanese dictionaries. He facilitated the translation of the Bible to Japanese and was a great supporter of Christian education in Japan.
